The Forty-Seven Ronin by Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print, often titled “Act XI: Rōnin Breaking into the Inner Quarters of Moronao’s Residence,” was created by Utagawa Hiroshige in the 1830s–1840s. It depicts the night raid by the forty-seven rōnin on the mansion of Kira Yoshinaka, a pivotal moment in the story of Chūshingura and one of Japan’s most enduring historical legends.The scene shows the samurai forcing their way into the residence, using bamboo poles to pry open the shutters as they carry out their long-awaited act of revenge. The event traces back to 1701, when their lord, Asano Naganori, was compelled to commit ritual suicide after striking Kira Yoshinaka following an insult. Left masterless, the rōnin later avenged him, an act that came to symbolize loyalty, sacrifice, and the spirit of bushidō.

‘夜討入’ Youchi-iri

Introducing the HIROSHIGE ‘夜討入’ Youchi-iri strap, inspired by Utagawa Hiroshige’s dramatic depiction of the Akō rōnin advancing under the cover of night.

The scene captures the moment before the famous night attack, as the rōnin cross the Ryōgoku Bridge on their way to confront Kira’s residence. Snow falls quietly over Edo while the group moves with purpose, marking one of the most iconic episodes of loyalty and resolve in Japanese history.

This historic moment unfolds across the strap, translating Hiroshige’s woodblock composition into a wearable piece of storytelling. Hand-antiqued leather with a brown patina forms the base, while the engraved artwork appears across the supple calf leather in white. Hand stitching and contrasting gold cross-stitching echo the tones of the original print, adding depth and character to the design.

Engraved onto carefully selected leather and finished by hand, each strap carries subtle variations that reflect the artisanal process behind it. Over time, the leather develops a natural patina, allowing the artwork and material to age gracefully together.

The new HIROSHIGE ‘夜討入’ Youchi-iri strap is priced at US$249. Each piece includes complimentary Apple Watch adaptors, allowing it to be worn seamlessly across both Apple Watch and traditional mechanical watches. 

The strap measures 20mm at the lugs and 16mm at the buckle, with proportions suited for refined timepieces.

Deliveries will start from mid-May onwards.

Hiroshige's Artisanal Craftsmanship

Crafted from hand-antiqued leather with a brown patina, newly introduced to the HIROSHIGE series, this strap features a rich brown tone complemented by a detailed artwork engraving and gold cross-stitch accents. The scene is laser engraved into supple calf leather in white, where the natural grain enhances its depth and clarity. The warm tones echo the palette of Hiroshige’s original woodblock print. Designed for both durability and character, the leather will develop a refined patina with wear.

Laser engraving detail

This historic moment is translated onto the strap as a wearable piece of storytelling, drawing from Hiroshige’s original woodblock composition. On the HIROSHIGE ‘夜討入’ Youchi-iri strap, selected elements are carefully reinterpreted through intricate laser engraving. Rather than reproducing the artwork in full, key details are isolated and rendered onto the leather, allowing the most expressive moments of the scene to come forward.

The strap is thoughtfully proportioned at 20mm at the lugs and 16mm at the buckle, a classic taper that complements the elegance of fine mechanical watches. At the same time, each piece includes complimentary Apple Watch adaptors, allowing it to transition seamlessly into a more contemporary setting.

This tariff percentage is subject to change as and when announced by the current US Administration, and does not include 'reciprocal tariffs' which have been suspended for 90 days. This may be on top of any existing state or federal consumption taxes and charges. These new tariffs and any other charges will be paid directly by you to our delivery partner DHL on fulfilment. Hiroshige will not collect such tariffs and charges from you upfront. Due to the limited nature of the watch, Hiroshige orders cannot be cancelled, returned, nor refunded.
