'藤枝' Fujieda

Introducing the HIROSHIGE ‘藤枝’ Fujieda strap, from Utagawa Hiroshige’s Fujieda: Changing Porters and Horses, part of his celebrated The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō series.

The scene captures the bustle of Fujieda, the 22nd station along the Tōkaidō road connecting Edo and Kyoto. Known as a busy relay point where travelers changed horses and porters before continuing their journey, Hiroshige portrays the station in the midst of its daily activity. Porters load and unload baggage, horses wait to be readied, while the lead traveler liaises with the station master, offering a vivid glimpse into the soul and vital force that kept Japan’s most important highway moving – the people.

This human-centered composition is translated on the strap through a combination of engraved calf leather and hand-treated turquoise leather. Characters from Hiroshige’s artwork are engraved in black across supple white calf leather, transitioning into textured turquoise leather that is individually treated by hand. A translucent black ink is applied across the surface before the excess is allowed to wash away naturally, settling into the leather’s creases. This reveals irregular darkened traces, accentuating depth and texture that makes each piece subtly unique. Orange hand stitching and cross-stitching add a vivid finishing detail, creating contrast against the turquoise and monochrome artwork.

Engraved onto carefully selected leather and finished by hand, each strap carries subtle variations that reflect the artisanal process behind it. Over time, the leather develops a natural patina, allowing the artwork and material to age gracefully together.

Deliveries will start from November onwards.

Hiroshige's Artisanal Craftsmanship

Crafted from textured turquoise leather and individually treated by hand, this strap features a distinctive finish complemented by black artwork engraving and vivid orange cross-stitch accents. A translucent black ink is carefully applied across the leather before the excess is allowed to wash away naturally, settling into the creases to accentuate its distinctive texture. This hand-finished process creates subtle variations in depth and character across each piece, contributing to a strap that reflects the spirit of Hiroshige’s artwork, transforming an ordinary moment of travel into wearable art.

Laser engraving detail

This lively scene is translated onto the strap as a wearable piece of storytelling, drawing from Hiroshige’s original woodblock composition. On the HIROSHIGE ‘藤枝’ Fujieda strap, selected elements are carefully reinterpreted through intricate laser engraving. Rather than reproducing the artwork in full, key details of the bustling relay station, from the porters and horses to the goods being prepared for the onward journey, are isolated and rendered onto the leather, bringing the movement and energy of the original scene to the forefront.

Designed for both mechanical timepieces and Apple Watch

The strap is thoughtfully proportioned at 20mm at the lugs and 16mm at the buckle, a classic taper that complements the elegance of fine mechanical watches. At the same time, each piece includes complimentary Apple Watch adaptors, allowing it to transition seamlessly into a more contemporary setting.

This dual compatibility reflects a considered approach to design, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern wearability. Whether paired with a mechanical timepiece or an Apple Watch, the strap retains its character, offering a consistent aesthetic that bridges heritage and everyday use.
